The problem that shocked users was noticed during last weekend’s Evolution, the world’s largest fighting game tournament held in Las Vegas. Players from all around the world flocked to the Mandalay Bay Convention Center to compete in games like Street Fighter 6, Guilty Gear Strive, and Tekken 7, among others. According to what was observed there, the PlayStation 5 is melting its USB ports!
PlayStation 5 is melting its USB ports
Since the PS5 only has one USB-A port in the front, many players plugged their fighting game controllers into one of the available ports at the back. Considering these systems often remained on for hours due to the elimination format in which competitors played, the PS5s were likely heating up throughout the day.
As a result, the PS5’s temperatures rise high enough to melt the plastic within the USB ports, likely due to the heat being expelled from the back of the system. Some users experiencing the issue reported that their cables fused with the PS5’s USB ports and when pulled out, they brought the entire port with them. Neither Sony nor Evo has provided any official statement on the matter.
It’s worth noting that some users might have used old, unauthorized converters on the PS5 due to lack of cross-platform compatibility, which could potentially introduce issues stemming from the use of unauthorized hardware. It remains uncertain whether the affected USB ports are exclusive to faulty PS5 units.
In partnership with the production company RTS, Sony acquired Evo jointly in 2021. With Sony’s direct involvement, the default system for the Street Fighter 6 competition became the PS5. Competing against Microsoft and Nintendo, Sony has made its mark in the fighting game community. However, this emerging issue doesn’t bode well for Sony’s reign.
How can the issue of melting PS5 USB connection points be prevented?
- Use the front USB-A or USB-C port instead of the rear one next to the heat vent.
- If you have to use the rear USB-A port, wait for the console to cool down before plugging it back in.
- Avoid using unauthorized converters until an official statement comes from Sony or third-party hardware manufacturers.
